Bought a book for a friend who is an art professor. Here is her review:
In the beginning of his book, Barkey says his art is a way to explore questions without worrying too much about answers. It does that. It also does more; the paintings create physical and psychological spaces that generously allow viewers to join the questioning. They create spaces for contemplation. The cultural references flow back and forth in time and place. There are references to art history, social media, landscapes, and situations that reflect the varied places Barkey has lived.
The figures are frozen in uncomfortable situations. They recognize human failing, but not with resignation. Even though there are not tidy solutions, there is no sense of getting comfortable with any status quo.

In the introduction to Painting People, Charlotte Mullins says, "The figure within painting offers the artist a chance to communicate directly to our senses." Barkey's paintings do this.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in visual journaling. It has examples of various ways of approaching subject matter that would be encouraging to anyone interested in responding to life in ways where words may fail.

The Art of Josh Barkey Josh Barkey Books Reviews

I very much enjoyed not only seeing the witty commentary on life that he's done visually, but also the written commentary introducing us to his thoughts and reasoning behind the art. Very insightful text as well as well as created art.
An accessible, clever, comical, thoughtful and inspiring book of art and commentary. It made me laugh out loud, nod in agreement, and smile at the humanity shared within it. It also reminded me how it feels to create art and inspired me to start doing that again. A great little treasure that is very relatable!
Whimsical and wondrous, this book is more than it appears. It is part prose and part poetry, with illustration that promises adventure and delivers. The artwork at times rings echoes of Georges Mazilu or Salvador Dali meets Shel Silverstein. A great choice for the eclectic art lover.
I am a friend of Mr. Barkey's, thus biased. I am also, in my opinion, an honest man. I liked the book. I was surprised how much I liked the book. It would be a great gift for any aspiring artist, especially a teen to college aged visual artist. The variety of styles Josh Barkey exhibits in this small book is impressive to say the least. A good, intelligent and unique sense of humor is revealed as well as a soulful hope-r, that has wrestled with hopelessness and despair. There are about 12 works of his, on display in IMMORTALITY, that I would proudly hang on my wall.
In my opinion, The Art of Josh Barkey came off as a memoir expressed through art. Each element in each piece seems to be significant, as this art is dense with symbolism which is used to express thoughts that can't quite be put into words. While most of the art is indicative of what is going on in the Artist's life at they were created, these works also engage in philosophical questions, banksy-esque satirical illustrations of our generation, and representation of emotional struggles.

For future readers (or lookers), I would like to point out that this collection cannot be absorbed in one sitting. As most of the art is used to construct an idea, each element is important in order to understand the "whole picture". Sometimes, the most powerful elements in this collection are the most subtle.
Great little book of delightful, witty, and profound art, along with the author's commentary. Barkey invites us into his mind and his art creation process. Reflections on technology and on human apathy towards suffering and beauty. Glimpses of faith as well. He says he has turned his creative energies from visual art towards writing, but I wish he'd do more visual art at some point. I love the way he thinks through images. And he's very gifted in painting and drawing. His "Naive" (Evian spelled backwards), a rendition of Velazquez's "The Water Carrier of Seville" replacing the water glass with a plastic bottle of Evian as a philosophical footnote on the toxicity of our time, is every bit as good as the original! Lots of fun, and a quick read/perusal.
